Festival of creative documentary cinema
{mosimage}11TH JIHLAVA INTERNATIONAL DOCUMENTARY FILM FESTIVAL / OCTOBER 23-28, 2007
The biggest festival of documentary film in Central Europe.
Prestigious display of original documentary with the special emphasis on the works from Central Europe, that tries to offer wide and current information about the works of the past and contemporary world’s documentary cinematography. It offers the competition of the outstanding world creative documentaries (Opus Bonum), competition of Central European documentaries of the past year (Between the Seas), the competition of the Czech documentary (Czech Joy), and also the wide-ranging retrospective profiles of the important film personalities (Translucent Beings)
The criterion of documentary film selection does not lie only in the thematic importance, but also in the formal thoughtfulness and unique aesthetic qualities. We examine the field of documentary film also to its very borders – with fiction, experimental or essayistic film. We look for constructive dialogue between the filmmakers and critical audience, supported by the after-film discussions, large textual outlets and by the accompanying events, author book readings, workshops and discussion panels. During the six days, there is a space for approximately 100 feature-length films and 50 short films.
“Unexpected encounters and developments of films or creators we try to accompany also by unexpected conception of the festival as an attempt to consequent creation of the special artefact, particular levels of which are sandwiched and penetrated, influenced each other and subsequently even speak in a new style,” Marek Hovorka, festival director
Prizes of Jihlava IDFF:
Best World Documentary Film
Best Central European Documentary Film
Best Czech Documentary Film
Audience Award
Contribution to World Cinema
The central symbol of the Jihlava Festival is a funnel. In addition to its traditional uses, we can also listen or look through a funnel. No matter which end we put to our eye, we always see the same world differently! The funnel becomes a metaphor for perception and for bringing alive one's thinking which is how the organisers intend the festival to work. This attitude is reflected in the festival's central motto: "THINKING THROUGH FILM!"
